Sanctuary Riesling 2008

Sanctuary Riesling 2008

Philosophy

Vibrant, lively and charismatic the Pukeko reflects the Sanctuary style of wine. Sanctuary wines are produced by the world’s first carboNZeroCert TM winery. Sanctuary’s philosophy is to make great wines with minimal environmental impact. By purchasing Sanctuary wines you are helping to minimise your impacts on climate change.

Winemakers Notes

Classic Marlborough Riesling in a medium-dry style.

Bouquet: Plenty of tropical fruit, citrus and light spice on the bouquet. Variously described as having citrus blossom and glazed Tarte Tatin aromatics by the commentators.

Palate: A good tight entry to the palate, full bodied and fleshy middle and a good long finish.

Viticulture

Fruit from two Marlborough vineyards went into this wine. The wide range of flavors the wine exhibits are the result of blending from different soils and fruit maturity.

Harvest dates: 5th to 14th of April 2008
Harvesting: Machine harvested
Sites: Various Wairau Valley sites

Vinification

Gentle pressing (pneumatic presses) prior to cold setting. The fermentation was carried out in 100% stainless steel tanks, with full temperature control. Fermentation temperatures were kept low and we utilized carefully selected yeast strains to emphasize the fruits varietal character

Celebration
This wine needs celebrating for several reasons. It’s not the first time one of our Rieslings (NZWC) has been awarded the prestigious Cuisine “Top New Zealand Riesling” but this particular wine also carries the carboNZeroCert TM endorsement. This is the first time a carbon neutral wine has risen to the very top in a major New Zealand review or wine show; almost certainly also a world first. Recognition at this level is a resounding endorsement of sustainability in all its various forms: environmental, social and, given its “Best Buy” accolade, economic. This is the 21st vintage of Riesling made by the NZWC (as it’s now known). The Cuisine 1st is a nice present but as we know twenty firsts are for family and friends, not the one coming of age. So here’s a thank you to the folks who’ve helped us with this Riesling and all the others that have won trophies and awards worldwide (including “Top Riesling in the World” in its price category). A particular thanks to my old boss Norbert Seibel, who left me with an abiding belief in the greatness of the variety and its suitability to Marlborough and New Zealand.
