Our Philosophy

Sanctuary’s philosophy is:
To make great wine with minimal environmental impact.

This ethos is shared throughout all of our company’s brands, including Grove Mill and Frog Haven.  Our aim is to continue to develop and enhance our environmental programs, further increasing our commitment to environmental sustainability practices.

Pukeko’s are one of the few species of indigenous birds who have adapted and flourished since the arrival of man to New Zealand.  They can be found in almost any grassland areas, especially in swampy, wetland locations.  One of the Pukeko’s greatest pitfalls is their lack of road sense, or conversely, people’s encroachment on the Pukeko’s habitat.  Rather than retreating, Pukekos seem happy enough to coexist with the human population, unfortunately sometimes to their own demise.  They are drawn to roadsides because of the drains which mimic their ideal environment, which is diminishing.

Beside our Marlborough winery, we have restored a naturally occurring wetland, providing a Sanctuary for the Pukeko to call home.
