About carboNZero ^{Cert TM}

 

The carboNZero ^{Cert TM} programme is managed by Landcare Research New Zealand and provides tools for organisations and individuals to take measures in reducing their impact on climate change. There were 3 key steps we took to participate in the carboNZero ^{Cert TM} programme, they were:

 

1.                  Measure – calculate our CO₂ emissions

2.                  Manage – reduce our CO₂ emissions

3.                  Mitigate – offset our CO₂ emissions

 

Measure: This first step required us to measure our energy use from our daily operations. These operations included distribution, vehicle use, lighting and heating. Energy sources such as electricity, natural gas and petrol emit CO₂ into the atmosphere through burning of carbon based fossil fuels.

 

Management: After the measurement process was completed, an emission profile of the NZWC was compiled. This profile identified the sources of emissions and highlighted areas in which we could reduce our energy consumption. Energy efficient initiatives were adopted, saving on electricity and fuel where possible.

 

Mitigation: Mitigation is about ‘offsetting’ the effect of CO₂ emissions released into the atmosphere by our company. This offsetting was achieved by purchasing carbon credits from a verified scheme. For NZWC we were able to purchase credits from Landcare Research through the EBEX 21 program.

 

There is one further step in the process and that is to let people know about our carboNZero ^{Cert TM} certification and to market this effectively.  Sanctuary wines carry the certified carboNZero ^{Cert TM} label with an explanation as to what this means for the NZWC and the consumer.  For bottle shots of our products carrying this information please see the wines section of this website.
